Part A: Accounting for Partnership Firms and Companies

  1. Accounting for Partnership Firms:
    • Fundamentals of Partnership:
      • Nature of Partnership: Definition, features, and types of partnerships.
      • Partnership Deed: Contents and significance of a partnership deed.
      • Profit-Sharing Ratio: Accounting treatment for profit-sharing, capital accounts, and drawings.
      • Fixed vs. Fluctuating Capital Accounts: Understanding and preparation of capital accounts in partnership.
    • Change in Profit Sharing Ratio Among the Existing Partners:
      • Reconstitution of a Partnership Firm: Changes in profit-sharing ratio, calculation of sacrificing and gaining ratios, and accounting for revaluation of assets and liabilities.
    • Admission of a Partner:
      • Accounting Treatment: Adjustments required on the admission of a new partner, including goodwill, revaluation of assets and liabilities, and adjustment of capital.
    • Retirement and Death of a Partner:
      • Retirement: Adjustments and accounting treatment at the time of retirement of a partner.
      • Death: Accounting treatment on the death of a partner, preparation of the deceased partner’s capital account, and calculation of the amount due to the deceased partner.
    • Dissolution of a Partnership Firm:
      • Dissolution: Meaning, modes, and accounting treatment for dissolution, including settlement of accounts, payment of liabilities, and distribution of assets.
  2. Accounting for Companies:
    • Accounting for Share Capital:
      • Nature of Share Capital: Types of share capital (equity and preference), and issue of shares at par, at premium, and at a discount.
      • Issue of Shares: Accounting treatment for the issue of shares, including oversubscription and under-subscription, calls in arrears, and calls in advance.
      • Forfeiture and Reissue of Shares: Accounting treatment for forfeiture of shares and the reissue of forfeited shares.
    • Issue of Debentures:
      • Nature of Debentures: Meaning, types of debentures, and their issue at par, at premium, and at discount.
      • Accounting Treatment: Accounting for the issue of debentures, interest on debentures, and redemption of debentures.
    • Redemption of Debentures:
      • Methods of Redemption: Accounting treatment for redemption of debentures by lump sum payment, by draw of lots, and by purchase in the open market.
    • Financial Statements of a Company:
      • Preparation of Financial Statements: Understanding the structure and preparation of the company’s Balance Sheet and Statement of Profit and Loss according to the Companies Act, 2013.
      • Analysis of Financial Statements: Tools for analyzing financial statements, including comparative statements, common size statements, and trend analysis.

Part B: Analysis of Financial Statements

  1. Financial Statement Analysis:
    • Objective of Financial Statements: Understanding the purpose and importance of analyzing financial statements.
    • Tools for Financial Analysis: Methods used for analyzing financial statements, including ratios, comparative financial statements, and common size financial statements.
  2. Accounting Ratios:
    • Types of Ratios: Understanding liquidity ratios, solvency ratios, activity ratios, and profitability ratios.
    • Calculation and Interpretation: Calculation of key ratios such as current ratio, debt-equity ratio, gross profit ratio, net profit ratio, and return on investment.
  3. Cash Flow Statement:
    • Meaning and Objectives: Understanding the purpose of cash flow statements and their importance in financial analysis.
    • Preparation of Cash Flow Statement: Classification of cash flows into operating, investing, and financing activities. Preparation of cash flow statements as per Accounting Standard-3 (AS-3).

Part C: Project Work

  • Comprehensive Project: Students are required to prepare a project report on any topic covered in the syllabus, which may include practical exercises like the preparation of financial statements, ratio analysis, cash flow statements, or accounting for a partnership firm.

Assessment and Examination

  • The course is assessed through a combination of theoretical exams and practical project work. Theoretical exams test students' understanding of accounting principles, their ability to apply these concepts to various scenarios, and their problem-solving skills. Practical assignments and projects help students develop the ability to handle real-world accounting tasks.
